“Not every hostile question deserves an immediate answer — but every response should protect your leadership presence.”

1. Quick Tip: How to Respond to a Hostile Question (The Four D’s) — Depends
Did someone ask a question that feels like you need to respond fast to maintain your leadership presence?

Maybe you don’t know the answer yet—or you don’t fully understand the question. A safe, professional back-pocket response is:
“It depends.”
Then follow with a framing statement, such as:
* “There are several factors at play here, and I can share a couple of examples.”
* “There’s still a lot we don’t know right now.”
* “What are your thoughts?”
This buys you time while keeping control of the conversation.

Depends
"It depends’ isn’t avoidance — it’s a leadership pause that creates space for clarity and credibility.”
