Quick Tip: How to Respond to a Hostile Question (The Four D’s) — Defer

Sometimes a question is a curveball—or simply not something you should answer in the moment.

Examples:

* “That will be addressed by someone else shortly, so I need to move on.”

* “That’s not what I’m here to speak about today—I’d suggest connecting with HR.” (Then redirect.)

* “I’m sticking to today’s agenda, but it’s a good question. I’ll follow up by email.”

* “I’ll delegate this to my team, and someone will get you a response by end of day Friday.”

Deferring protects your time and your authority.

“Strong leaders know when to answer — and when to defer without apology.”

“Hostile questions don’t take power from you — reacting without intention does.”
