Neuroscience-Based Leadership - What is it and how can it help me?

Neuroscience-based leadership is a methodology that incorporates insights from neuroscience research (i.e., how the human brain works) and synthesizes it with how people behave in the workplace (i.e., patterns and behaviors). We simplify it to mean: how our brain works at work.

As we incorporate neuroscience principles, leaders can better engage employees, create a more positive work environment, and ultimately drive better performance. We all know people are complex and dynamic beings, so we tackle common trends and principles with inquiry and curiosity. There is no “one size that fits all” solution, yet there are principles we can apply and impact positive progress.

Some areas to consider include:

  1. Improved decision-making: Neuroscience-based leadership can help leaders make better decisions by providing insights into how the brain processes information and how people make decisions. Understanding how the brain works in decision-making can help people make more informed and effective decisions.

  2. Better communication: Neuroscience-based leadership can help people communicate more effectively with team members. Understanding how people process information and tailor communication styles to their preferences can simplify communication and ensure our high-stakes messages resonate at the right frequency.

  3. Increased motivation and engagement: Neuroscience-based leadership can help create a work environment that fosters motivation and engagement by understanding the underlying factors that drive these behaviors. This can include creating a positive work culture, providing opportunities for growth and development, and recognizing and rewarding achievement. This isn’t earth-shattering or shocking information, but when you retain and motivate great talent, your life as a leader is much easier.

  4. Improved productivity: By understanding how the brain works, neuroscience-based leadership can help create strategies to improve productivity with effective tools and resources. Even helping your team understand the most productive cadence of their day can increase productivity by a double-digit percentage!

Overall, neuroscience-based leadership can provide valuable insights into how people work and how to lead and manage them effectively. We have many workshops and experienced leaders as coaches who can help you or your teams tackle the most challenging problems … when we understand how our brain works at work, we can perform at our best and create the space for others to do the same.

We have only begun to study the brain at work in the last few decades. Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the first MRI, researchers at Duke University generated scans of a mouse brain that are 64 million times crisper than a typical clinical MRI for humans, the scientific equivalent of going from an 8-bit graphic to a Chuck Close painting. Imagine what we can learn about the brain at work using this technology!
